While reading this, I was a bit confused at first. I didnt really know what the author was talking about, and there was alot of things that were not explained. After I got to the third paragraph it was kind of more clear what this was about. I thought that this treatment from the teachers was obsurd. You should strive in class, not have busy work just to occupy you. They were defined as "slow", when they really were just normal human beings that are behind in some areas. "Average" is all they wanna be, when they really are, however people convice them other wise.
1. QUESTION: Describe Rose's life in Voc. Ed. What were the teachers like? Have you ever had experience with teachers like these?
ANSWER: His life in Voc. Ed. was miserable. He was treated as "slow." This curriculum was designed to pretty much occupy you, not teach you. His teacher was careless and had no respect for their students nor did the students have respect for them. The teachers were not experienced in their subjects, therefore, did not have a lesson plan. I have had a couple experience by teachers but other than that, I haven't had to much problem.
2. QUESTION: What did Voc. Ed. do to Rose and his fellow students? How did it affect them intellectually, emotionally, and socially? Why was it subsequently so hard for Rose to catch up in math?
ANSWER: Well it made their self confidence go down and it made them feel like they were not as important as other students. They believe that they are below average. Intellectually, they did not gain anything, but they lost basic knowledge of subjects because it was too easy. Emotionally, it shattered their confidence, and made them believe that they were as dumb as people said they were. And socially it made them almost awkward towards outsiders of the class. Inside the class however were close because they joked and fooled around in class. I think he was having a hard time because the curriculum was meant to occupy not teach, as well as, not being able to adequately solve math fractions.
3. QUESTION: Why is high school so disorienting to students like Ken Harvey? How does he cope with it? What other strategies do students use to cope with the pressures of judgement they encounter at school?
ANSWER: It was disorienting because Ken was really not a school person, he was a car person. Not everyone at school knows as much as he does about cars. He copes with it by distracting himself by having a hobby (cars). The strategies to cope with this is to either ignore it (as hard as it is to do), or just make friends with people that have the same interests as you.
4. QUESTION: Rose explains in Paragraph 16 that high school can be a "tremendously disorienting place." What, if anything, do you find disorienting about college? What steps can student take to lessen feelings of disorientation?
ANSWER:I don't find college to disorienting. The only thing that kinda threw me off in the beginning is the age gap between me and some fellow classmates of mine. The way to get over this was plain and simple. Just talk and make friends with those people, and get to know them as a person. Don't judge a book by its age!:)
5. QUESTION: How does your experience of education compare (or contrast) to Mike Rose's? ANSWER: Well it compares to Mike Rose's because in my incident, i had a hard time focusing in class, just like he did. The contrast between the two stories were that we were not focusing for different reasons. His was that the classes were not challenging enough. Mine was because of a death in the family.
