Notes On "Definition" & "Proccess"

Section 45: They types of Definitions for wirting are simple. In an explanation, this is more of an Extended Definition because sometimes two words cannot be defined in the same sentence. In a way Definitions can be a proccess, explaining what the STEPS are to fixing a certain problem, or different STAGES of something. Section 46: Section 46 was about proccess, and basically that means a paper that gives insruction on how to do something. It also consists of planning, and steps in proper sequence. Section 47: Is about Enumeration or being Chronological. Thisis putting steps in order, like what came first in time. For Example, the Televison Set obviously came before the Ipods. Section 48: Is Classification. We talked about this in class, and it basically is saying there is different ways to classify everything. It says how the items being studied are similar, yet different.

Reactions to "Against School As Presently Constituted"

I feel as though he is the type to always have a plan. He thinks that if people plan better, that they will be more successful. I think he is happy with his life, but thinks that if his relatives planned better he wouldn't have anything bad to say. He talks about schools and how all schools back in the 20's and 30's were all predujice. He kind of talks about how racsim is a problem even today, both is rual and urban places, which is really sad. This paper really made some good points about how "No Child Left Behind", which makes it sound like children that are under privilege will have a huge high paying job, which sometimes happens, but not most of th time. This was really a sad story for me becasue it just shows you that not everthing is what it turns out to be.

Reaction to "Idiot Nation"

I have to say that this this short story is something that i completely agree with. it kind of remindes me of my school, and when i was there. Even as a student athlete i knew that the people who weren't a student athlete were getting ripped off. In our school we had huge cracks in our roof, and buckets always in the hallway to catch the water leaking from them. We had books that lead back to 74', and i once found my moms name in a textbook i had gotten. When we had budget cuts, instead of cutting money from sports first we cut 6 teachers, making the class sizes huge. It seems as though we don't have our priorities in check. Our sport stadium is one of the nicest around this area, and it has its own maintence crew. Before a game the mascot and "BULLDOGS" are always painted on both sides of the field, and the grass is always mowed before football games. Each sport throughout the year is given 1,000 dollars budget. Therefore i could totally can relate to what he was saying. I dont think people are stupid in this nation, but i think that their priorities are not in check. Entertainment always seems more important than politics which is a flaw that the U.S. has and needs to fix. We should figure out where we need to spend, and how much we should spend there.

"I Just Want to be Average" Part 2: Response

The teachers that he encountered at his school were all very similar except one. All the teachers basically have the same teaching styles as well as the same syllabus. They don't have origniality, and all of the teachers have low expectations for Voc. Ed people. Some used their own looks to intimidate students, and one was a football coach that could barely read the textbook aloud. Its obviously a low income school, becasue if it wasn't they wouldn't have football coaches teach a class they know nothing about. They teachers always claimed that the new classes were a "challenge, howeveer the students didn't feel as though they were. Except mr. Macfarland. he taught 5 sections of senior English and it looked as though he slept out of his car. His teeth were  stained, he had a wrinkly shirt, and a short tie. but the students, after they got to know him of course, loved him. He had them read many books, and had quizzes everyday. He was known to have brought college prep into mercy high. His lectures were made by himself, and he took notes on the board for his students. he asked questions to his students often, and made them study poetry. He was witty and smart, and could out smart anyone that came in his way.Rose didn't read since elementary school, so he said he enjoyed getting back into it. Macfarland developed a club for cllege prep, and he wanted everyone to join in. He even asked Rose where he was going to college, set him up with a college, and got him a loan so that he could go. macFarland made knowledge a bonding agent.

Comparison to "Civilize them With a Stick"

This story really shocked me, I could not believe they were so abusive. Its very hard to believe that not to
long ago it was O.K. to swat a kid, or hit them. Now in present day, it is strongly strongly frowed upon, and if you do it you could have a law suit coming at you. She constantly questioned what she was learning, and if she really was getting thr right treatment she deserves. Because the teachers were questioned by their own students, they became vial, and cold towards them, and sometimes abusing them.
My Grandfather went to school in a time where it was okay to do this to children, and if they did something wrong would also get punshment aat home for it as well which sometimes resulted into another swat. He said it was extremely painful, and since he had a hard time focusing on school work, swats were in his mind and given quite frequently. Its sad to think that this happens. It can really make a student hate school, ad not what to go, but i don't think that they realize it.

Answers to Questions: UNIT 3!

Q: What did Mr. Escalante think education should do?
A: Well I believe that they both had different goals for their students, however, when it came down to it they were personable to all of their students. he thought it should prepare them for after high school, as well as it should teach them that even if their expectations to everyone else is low, they still can achieve great things if THEIR OWN expectations are high.
Q: What did Mr. Escalante's colleagues (other teachers and adminastration) think education should do?
A: I believe they thought it was a prep for they to graduate high school, however they also thought that putting any time and effort into teaching these kids were pointless becasue the children weren't gonna be successful anyway. I feel as though they just looked at it as a by-pass to try and still do there job, but not put any effort into teaching them.
Q: What did Mr. Keating think education should do?
A: He thought that education should be about learning who you are as a person, learning your own interests, and having different views on a certain subject or topic. He thought you should strive, and come out of your comfort zone to be able to learn new things.
Q: What did Mr. Keating's colleages think education should do?
A: Well, i think they thought it should prepare them for their own success out of high school. Helton was a prep school for the students who planned on being extremely successful doctors, scientists, ect. So it should basically prep them for their own job later in life.
Q: What do you think your favorite teacher thought education should do?
A: I think Mrs. Quam thought it should teach you how to handle real world situations, and teach you traits like respect, honesty, and other social skills, as well as learning how to work hard for what you want, and having the drive to complete it.
Q:What do you think your worst teacher though education should do?
A: i think she thought that you need to be disiplined in your life, and always have someone there to keep you in check. I think she was ultimately very concerned with the maturity levels becasue some were very low. And i think she thought education should prep a student for life, the good and the bad parts not just the good.
